School districts offering meal programs during pandemic

Many school districts in our area have created plans to ensure students will have access to meals, either by delivery or at pick-up locations.

Information on how districts are handling the process is listed below. We will continue to update this information as more details are announced from other districts.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is providing weekly meal bundles on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at select distribution locations across the district. The week of Nov. 23, the meal bundle pick-up day will be on Tuesday, Nov 24.

• Meal bundles are available to all full remote learners and 6-12 students.
• K-5 students can also get a meal bundle to cover their out of school days.
• EC and pre-k students attending in-person learning, 5 days a week, are not eligible for meal bundles because they can receive meals at school.

Burke County Public Schools

Burke County Public Schools Child Nutrition Department will continue to serve students during the transition to hybrid learning. Students will have the option to receive free breakfast, lunch and a super snack at school. Students enrolled in the Virtual Academy will have the option to pick-up meals as well.

Cabarrus County Schools

Cabarrus County Schools Nutrition Department provides free meals to students ages 1-18 through curbside pick-up and school bus routes. Children do not have to be enrolled in Cabarrus County Schools to participate.

Catawba County Schools

Catawba County Schools is offering free grab-and-go meals to all students.

• Students attending on Mondays and Tuesdays can pick up meals on Tuesdays at their school.
• Students attending on Wednesdays and Thursdays can pick up meals on Thursdays at their school.
• Kindergarten and first-grade students and Rosenwald students can pick up meals on Thursdays. Locations vary.
• 100% Remote Learners can pick up meals on Tuesdays.
• Challenger students can now pick up meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Cleveland County Schools

Cleveland County Schools Nutrition Services is providing free meals from Monday through Friday at 12 pick-up sites.

The meals are available to any child or teen ages 2 to 18 years old.

Fort Mill Schools

The Student Nutrition Department will offer a meal pick-up option for students enrolled in the Fort Mill Virtual Academy or for A/B students on their E-Learning Days. Meal pick-up will be at Nation Ford High in the bus loop on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Gaston County Schools

Gaston County Schools will provide free grab-and-go meals for students beginning Tuesday, March 17.

Meals will be distributed at 11 locations, including Bessemer City High School, Carr Elementary School, Cherryville Elementary School, Erwin Community Center, Grier Middle School, Kiser Elementary School, North Belmont Elementary School, Robinson Elementary School, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Warlick Academy and Woodhill Elementary School.

Distribution will take place on the following dates from 10:30 a.m. until noon: March 17-20 and March 23-27.

Hickory Public Schools

Hickory Public Schools is offering a drive-thru/pick-up for daily meals on weekdays while school is closed at Longview Elementary and Viewmont Elementary from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meals will also be available through PORCH and Hickory-area McDonald’s.

Kannapolis City Schools

Kannapolis City Schools has established a grab-and-go student meal service while schools are closed. Beginning Monday, any KCS student can obtain free breakfast and lunch at one of five distribution sites or via a mobile meal delivery service available at several sites throughout the district.

Anyone unable to access either option should call the KCS helpline at 704-920-2222.

Lincoln County Schools

Lincoln County Schools is providing free grab-and-go meals at eight locations to any child younger than 18. Students are not required to be present. Parents/guardians may pick up meals to take to students and younger siblings at home. Lunch and a breakfast meal for the following morning will be available.

Meals can be picked up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following locations: Battleground Elementary; East Lincoln High; Iron Station Elementary; Norris S. Childers Elementary; North Brook Elementary; Pumpkin Center Intermediate; S. Ray Lowder Elementary; and West Lincoln Middle.

Richmond County Schools

Richmond County Schools is providing grab-and-go meals for students to receive breakfast and lunch.

The following sites are being used as drive thru locations from 10:30 a.m. to noon: Ellerbe Middle; Monroe Avenue Elementary; Ninth Grade Academy; West Rockingham Elementary; Hamlet Middle; L.J. Bell Elementary; Cordova Middle; Hoffman Recreation Center; Mangum Community Center; Norman Community Center; Dobbins Heights Community Center; the Annex on 102 Safie 6th Street; South (Jack) Breeden Park in South Hamlet; Cartledge Creek Baptist Church; Philadelphia Community Church; Marston First Baptist Church; and Rockingham Skateland.

Stanly County Schools

Stanly County Schools is providing meals to all students at no cost through two options – pick up at regular bus stops and drive-thrus at eight designated locations.

Drive thru locations will operate Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Locations include East Albemarle, Central, Badin, AHS, AMS, Norwood, South Stanly MS and Stanfield.

Union County Public Schools

Union County Public Schools Nutrition Services is offering free daily meals to children 18 years old and younger while schools are closed.

Grab-and-go meals will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. seven days a week at the following locations: Wingate Elementary (301 Bivens St.); Health Sciences Academy at Monroe Middle (601 E. Sunset Drive); Sardis Elementary (4416 Sardis Church Road); and Rocky River Elementary (500 N. Rocky River Road).

Meals can be picked up at the front entrance of the schools.
